I think a big part of why the name Levi is used in 2 and Matthew is used in three is the trans-formative themes in the two chapters. as Jesus calls, heals and appoints he gives us a new identity not based on our sinful past but on our relationship with him. Its no longer Levi the tax collector, its Matthew the "gift of God" and apostle or "sent one" of Jesus

Thank you Pastor Ken for - somewhat - clearing this up. As a small group teacher at our church (www.ferrishill.org), I am often looking for easy answers to questions like this and sometimes, as you alluded, the answers just aren't black and white.
